When damaged, short-circuited, or heated, these batteries may undergo a process called thermal runaway, which can result in fire or even explosion. This risk remains even after the battery has been thrown away, which is why discarded batteries can sometimes cause landfill fires.

- Laptop - Lithium Ion
- Cell Phone - Lithium Ion
- Universal Interruptible Battery Backup System or UPS - Lead Acid
